Bulgarians are suspected of spying for Russia for years

A financier and a loving couple are suspected of being Russian spies, according to the BBC.

The trio comes from Bulgaria and has lived and worked in the UK for several years.

In January, they will be put on trial.

The trio, who lived and worked in Britain for several years, were arrested in February by London’s anti-terrorist police and have been in custody since then.

They are accused of having worked for Russian intelligence, according to the BBC.

The police have been able to find passports, ID cards and other documents for a number of European countries: Great Britain, Bulgaria, France, Italy, Spain, Croatia, Slovenia, Greece and the Czech Republic.

In January, the three defendants will appear in court in London.

Lived in the UK for several years

The oldest of them, Orlin Roussev, 45, arrived in the UK in 2009 and worked for three years in a technical role in finance. According to the BBC, he has a history of dealings in Russia.

On Roussev’s Linkedin profile, it is stated that he owned a company in signals intelligence, which, among other things, concerns the prevention of communication or electronic signals.

He is said to have also worked as an advisor to the Bulgarian Ministry of Energy.

According to former neighbors, the other two suspects are a loving couple. Bizer Dzhambazov, 41, is said to have worked as a hospital driver and Katrin Ivanova, 31, as a laboratory assistant in private care.

They both moved to the UK about ten years ago and ran an organization helping Bulgarians integrate into the UK. According to Bulgarian state documents, the couple should also have worked to help Bulgarians abroad with voting.

Increased concern about Russian spies

In recent years, the anti-terrorist police have increased surveillance against suspected state threats and espionage. Above all, threats that may come from Russia.

The heightened level of concern is based on several circumscribed events in recent years that are linked to Russian intelligence operations in the UK.

In 2018, Russian agents tried unsuccessfully to assassinate former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter with the nerve agent Novichok. Later that year, the police were able to confirm that Novitjok was found in a perfume bottle after 44-year-old Dawn Sturgess was found dead.
