The Ronald McDonald Children’s Fund is starting a petition, which has been signed more than 120,000 times. In addition, the opponents of building in the meadow are dismissed as ‘bureaucrats’, and that is a sore point for then councilor Jan Wijmenga of the Christian Union. “Strange tactics were not avoided in that action,” he says now. “The petition that was started by the Children’s Fund, and with the support of USP partners, was a really strange move. There was no nuance whatsoever. The council considered ‘bureaucratic rules more important than sick children’, they said.” Wijmenga thinks that frame is inappropriate.
