As a fan, some ideas make you want to bang your head against the wall. What the heck drove producers to look back on the great two Hellboy movies after 11 years to let the fantasy catastrophe Hellboy – Call of Darkness follow? For four years after that, any ambitions of the franchise were dead. Today the flop is on TV.
On TV: Fantasy blockbuster disappointed millions of fans immensely
Good-natured half-demon Hellboy (David Harbour) grew up among people like his mentor Trevor Bruttenholm (Ian McShane) and helps them avert paranormal dangers. In his latest case, Merlin’s wife Nimue (Milla Jovovich) threatens wipe out the whole world in a bloodthirsty battle.
After the fantasy highlights Hellboy and Hellboy II – The Golden Army, the franchise had developed a loyal fan base. But Hellboy – Call of Darkness seemed artfully evading the wishes of the community. Instead of continuing both films, the cinema saga was completely restarted.
Fan-favorite Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy) and master director Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) were absent. Instead of this blunt sayings and exaggerated brutal violence set the tone. The film ended up grossing just under $54 million on a production budget of $50 million (via The Numbers).
Four years later, however, fans can hope with cautious optimism that the cinema franchise will be saved. A new part of the fantasy series is in the starting blocks and could be in cinemas later this year.
