With The Witch and The Lighthouse, Robert Eggers has become one of the most exciting contemporary genre directors. For his third feature film The Northman he received a lush budget of almost 100 million dollars available to realize a revenge epic.

The Northman: One of the BEST movies of the year

The Northman unleashes revenge inferno with bloody action and bizarre interludes

In the story of the film, Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård) wants the death of his father Avenge King Aurvandil (Ethan Hawke) and free his mother, Queen Gudrún (Nicole Kidman), from the prison of the murderer (Claes Bang), who is also his uncle. On his vendetta he meets Olga (Anya Taylor-Joy), who has magical powers.

The Northman grossed just under $70 million worldwide, making the film a flop. Robert Eggers’ excessive vision was probably too unwieldy for a mass audience, because the director mixes bloody action à la Vikings with his film regular art house bonds in the form of surreal sequences and bizarre interludes.

Along with the usual perfectionist attention to detail by Eggers and the star cast, The Northman becomes a visually stunning revenge frenzy that you should definitely give it another chance.
