Even a bad time travel movie is fun because it’s a time travel movie after all. Looper is actually a really good time travel movie. We even ranked Rian Johnson’s gem at number 6 in the top 50 science fiction movies since 2000. Today you can see wild and sophisticated mix of genres on TV.
Assassins and Time Travel: What is Looper About?
In the year 2077 it is possible to travel through time. Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a so-called looper. He works for the Mafia prior to this invention in 2035. In the future, the syndicate will use the possibility of time travel to send unpleasant people into the past and have them eliminated by the contract killers. The job pays well.
Looper – Trailer 2 (English) HD
One day, Joe has to carry out a very special assignment. He’s one of the best in the business, but he’s hesitant about this target: Joe to kill his aged future self (Bruce Willis). But Joe Senior has other plans.
Hard Sci-Fi Vision: What Makes Looper So Interesting?
Looper is basically John Wick if you add a fourth dimension to the contract killer hunt. That sounds attractive and complicated, and it is. Rian Johnson (Knives Out 1 and 2) is known for intricate but elegantly told genre stories. This is how Looper works on three levels: as a classic contract killer film, as a time travel experiment and as a thoroughly in-depth philosophical meditation.
In our justification for Looper’s sixth place in the list of the best sci-fi films since 2000, we wrote:
Ryan Johnson has created something very special here. Looper is a violent action film and a philosophical sci-fi experiment at the same time, about inevitability and the value of human life.
