Why American Psycho is worth it

In his original book, author Bret Easton Ellis exercises strong Criticism of jaded hedonism and the Wall Street greed of 80’s America. Pages of descriptions of branded products and expensive clothing alternate with incredibly brutal descriptions of the most repulsive violent crimes.

The American Psycho film adaptation doesn’t quite match the explicit cruelty of the original. Mary Harron prefers one from her movie very black comedy made, which still skilfully captures the core of the novel.

Especially Christian Bale in his first major role, Patrick Bateman plays wonderfully as a smooth charmer with a dream body. The off-screen commentary plunges us into the ailing mind of the empty main character, while it’s never clear if Bateman’s interspersed bloody deeds might be only in his imagination occur.

This makes American Psycho a great mix of brutal psychological thriller, entertaining grotesque and sharp social criticism – packed in noble pictures and accompanied by chart hits of the time, about which Patrick Bateman could monologue for hours.
