The Trump government has presented its plan to dismantle the US Aid Authority USAID, the world’s largest donor.
The workforce of 8,000 will be just under 300, the AP reports with reference to sources at the authority.
Those who remain, together with local aid workers, will be unclear how many, manage the few “life -saving” programs and projects that the Trump government at the moment has continued.
President Donald Trump and his “efficiency manager” Elon Musk have already frozen funding for the authority and shut down aid programs worldwide, while employees were laid off.
On Thursday, trade unions for government employees submitted moods that require the shutdown to be stopped.
It is unclear if more services than the 300 now mentioned will remain. It will be clearer when Trump’s administration is completed with its review of the aid programs. Those who may remain are placed under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to the government.
“There will be foreign assistance that makes sense and is in line with our national interest,” said Foreign Minister Marco Rubio on Thursday.
USAID has had offices in some 60 countries and operations in around 120 countries and is counted as the world’s single largest donor of assistance.
