Bruce Willis biggest role was supposed to go to Arnold

The action decade of the 80s is coming to an end, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone are in full swing, but slowly new hero figures are pushing their way onto the market. Like Bruce Willis’ Normalo hero in Die Hard. The role should initially go to Schwarzenegger. But he laughed about it.

Arnold Schwarzenegger satirized Bruce Willis’ Die Hard hero

Screenwriter Steven E. de Souza is quoted by The Daily Beast:

They took the role to Arnold, who turned it down. They went to Sylvester Stallone [und] Richard Gere, which they turned down. It was 1987 and there were all these Rambo movies. ‘The hero is a sissy’, they said, ‘that’s no hero.’ Desperately turned [die Produzenten] to Bruce Willis.

In fact, the role of swearing, deeply flawed, run-of-the-mill cop John McClane did not fit the Schwarzeneggers’ and Stallones’ 1987 profile. Both co-starred The Phantom Command and The City Cobra just played two indestructible fighting machines again.

Nonetheless, the breath of fresh air in the action genre soon proved highly successful. The audience was fed up with the almost immortal mountains of muscle, but couldn’t get enough of McClane. By the end of the millennium alone, two films had been added to the Die Hard franchise.
