“Broken would still be an improvement”

Destiny 2 fans have almost reached the end of their patience, as Bungie’s top shooter has been plagued by disconnections and strange enemy behavior for the past week. Some players say that being broken would actually be an improvement for the game right now.

Destiny 2 currently has these problems: First, the shooter experienced its biggest weapon exploit in a long time, when players built themselves super-powerful shooting irons and not only destroyed everything, but also achieved some triumphs in a playful way.

While Bungie announced that it would fix the exploit as quickly as possible, further massive problems arose. Destiny 2 experienced “error code hiccups,” which players initially attributed to the exploit. But this was not the case. Bungie announced on September 20th that it was actually a hacker attack (DDoS) on the Destiny 2 servers.

That was a week ago now and the servers don’t seem to have calmed down much since then. As PCGamesN’s Ken Allsop notes, this makes Destiny 2 one of the most broken cases of an FPS game he’s seen to date.

Especially now that the new DLC “The Final Form” with new super abilities, like those of the Void Titan, is so close, this is not a good sign:

“40 seconds without an error code must be a world record”

The hacker attack is probably still to blame: Bungie has not yet commented further on the errors, so it can be assumed that they are still due to the DDoS attack.

  • The attackers of such attacks aim to overload network bandwidth or server system resources to such an extent that you can no longer play and give up.
  • If you don’t know what’s going on, you’ll think the game is broken, which adds to the damage. So that’s exactly what you want to achieve with such attacks.
  • Bungie is certainly not remaining idle in this regard, but apart from the initial announcement, it has also been silent. Apart from an announced background maintenance, the players were not further informed about the status. Probably also to avoid confirming the attackers.

In addition, the solutions often only work until the attackers switch to a different “technique”. Then it starts again from the beginning.

In addition to the error codes, the enemy AI in the game is also affected. Numerous Destiny 2 players are sharing clips online of enemies who no longer react to the Guardians at all, simply walking around or standing still as if there were no targets nearby.

A tweet from DestinyTracker via Twitter/X aptly sums up the mood.

Even in PvP things were weird: Almost every round in the normal Crucible was one draw after another in places. Mechanics, such as the zones in control mode, sometimes no longer worked.

Destiny 2 player Matthew Thomas Leshinsky said: Broken would be an improvement.

This is what the players say about the situation: While there is hope for a quick resolution to these issues, the mood in the Destiny 2 community remains divided. Some are patient and hope for improvement, while others have already lost their patience.

  • Guardian Mochá says: “Yes, these DDoS attacks totally messed up the game. I can’t even play it without constantly getting error codes and stuff.”
  • The player Dominic speculates: “It’s all because of the DDoS attackers. I bet they were paid for by those unhappy with the removal of the exploit weapons.”
  • Rooti, on the other hand, says, “At this point, I’m just not going to play Destiny until they sort this shit out.”
  • ImYunno even goes one step further: At this point I have the pre-order for “The Finale Form” [das kommende DLC im Februar 2024] canceled.
  • The future of Destiny 2 now depends on Bungie’s efforts to restore the game’s stability and quality and meet player expectations.

At least Sony is still confident in its position: Sony claims that buying Bungie for $3.6 billion would bring more than securing Activision Blizzard
