In Great Britain, there is now a storm around the governing party – again. That after the country’s former finance minister Nadhim Zahawi was fired. The background is an investigation into his tax affairs where Zahawi was forced to pay back multi-million sums. In the investigation, it appears that he concealed from several conservative leaders that he was under investigation by the tax authorities. It all ended with Zahawi having to pay around five million pounds in fines, more than SEK 60 million. “Just carelessness” The Swedish Tax Agency’s investigation concerns the sale of a stake in an opinion polling institute that Zahawi co-founded. The investigation began in April 2021, but Zahawi avoided mentioning the matter when he was appointed finance minister just over a year later. The report states that he should have understood from the beginning that these were serious allegations. Zahawi claims it was carelessness on his part, not deliberate tax evasion. When Prime Minister Rishi Sunak took office last year, he promised a professional government with integrity – against the background of the political chaos that has characterized the country in recent times.
