William Wragg, a member of the ruling Conservative Party in England, accused the government of trying to “blackmail” MPs who wanted Prime Minister Boris Johnson to step down.
William Wragg said lawmakers calling for Johnson’s resignation were “pressured and intimidated”.
Wragg was among the lawmakers calling for PM Johnson to resign.
The Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement that “there is no evidence” regarding Wragg’s accusations.
“If there is any evidence to support these claims, we will investigate very carefully,” the statement said.
‘Boris Johnson is acting like a mafia leader’
Angela Rayner, deputy leader of the main opposition Labor Party in England, called Wragg’s allegations “shocking”.
Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrat Party, accused Boris Johnson of “acting more like a mafia leader than a prime minister”.
Some Conservative Party lawmakers are demanding Johnson’s resignation after it was revealed that parties were held at the Prime Minister’s Residence during the coronavirus restrictions.
In order for a vote of confidence to be held in the Conservative Party’s parliamentary group on Boris Johnson, 54 of the party’s 360 deputies must submit their demands in this direction to the party administration.
Johnson, on the other hand, asks lawmakers who want his resignation to wait for the report of Sue Gray, who is investigating the parties held at the Prime Minister’s Residence during the coronavirus restrictions.
The report is expected to be made public next week.
