After receiving the Palme d’Or at the last Cannes Film Festival, “Anatomy of a Fall” is released in cinemas this Wednesday, August 23, 2023. We saw it, here is our review.
The jury of the 76th Cannes Film Festival was not mistaken. Anatomy of a fall, Palme d’or 2023, is a great film to see absolutely. The feature film directed by Justine Triet (Victoria, Sybil…) is THE cinema release for this Wednesday, August 23, 2023. Spectators discover the life of a couple dissected in court when a writer is accused of having killed her husband. The testimony of their son, who is visually impaired, then becomes essential.
There’s a whole world in Anatomy of a fall, a thousand riches that we can have fun analyzing or dissecting, without the film forgetting for a single moment to be a real moment of cinema. Meticulous and precise, Justine Triet’s film modernizes the trial film to paint a couple falling apart through the portrait of a modern, complex woman, on the margins and far from codes, who finds herself judged for what she represented.
During 2h30 which pass at full speed without a downtime, Justine Triet questions us about the notion of truth, and how it can be twisted and dispossessed when the intimate becomes public. The French director demonstrates a real virtuosity to make a moment (the trial) extremely codified and cold fascinating, a talent to find the way in this psychological labyrinth. The filmmaker also proves her talent for directing an actor by proposing to her cast, Sandra Hüller and Antoine Reinartz in the lead, breathtaking scores of authenticity. Even the dog plays well. Whether in the writing or in the staging, this Palme d’or is amply deserved.
Synopsis – Sandra, Samuel and their visually impaired son, Daniel, 11 years old, have been living together for a year in the mountains. One day, Samuel, Sandra’s husband, is found dead at the foot of their house. A suspicious death investigation is opened, and his wife is quickly in the sights of justice.
Anatomy of a fall won the Palme d’or at the Cannes Film Festival on May 27, 2023. By winning the supreme award on the Croisette, French director Justine Triet becomes the third woman crowned at Cannes, after Jane Campion and Julia Ducournau. In the cast of the Palme d’or 2023, we find the German actress Sandra Hüller (Toni Erdmann, The Zone of interest), but also the French actors Antoine Reinartz (César for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 2018) and Swann Arlaud (César for Best Actor in 2018).
