Exactly 6 months after its German cinema release, you can stream Takashi Yamazaki’s amazing monster blockbuster Godzilla Minus One on Netflix from June 1, 2024. We warmly recommend this emotional sci-fi spectacle.

This is what the sci-fi hit Godzilla Minus One is about

No prior knowledge of the Godzilla series is required with the latest bombast from Japan. Of course, it helps to know the background of the giant plasma-spraying lizard – after all, it is the 33rd Japanese Godzilla film. But it can also stand on its own as a historical film, war drama and monster metaphor.

Godzilla Minus One tells a completely new story set in the last days of World War II. It is about the kamikaze pilot Kōichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki), who lands on an island base because his plane is supposedly broken. His betrayal is recognized, but there are no consequences due to the approaching end of the war.

Godzilla is also a destruction machine in the water

That night, Godzilla comes to the island and, despite having a good opportunity, Kōichi fails to kill the monster – almost everyone on the island dies except Kōichi. The trauma and the crushing guilt plague him from then on as he tries to make ends meet after the war. He takes in a woman with an orphaned baby, but practically forces himself to be unhappy.

Soon he sees a chance to take revenge on Godzilla together with other war veterans and thus finally put an end to the war.

Godzilla Minus One is one of the best movies of 2023, but hardly anyone is streaming it on Netflix

The latest Godzilla film has been on Netflix since Saturday, but it has made it over the weekend didn’t even make it into the top 10Netflix keeps subscribers up to date with the top 10 lists for the most streamed series and films of the day in the app itself. But hardly anyone seems to have the 2023 critics and box office hit on their radar. Instead, the rating flops Atlas and Sniper: Rogue Mission and the mediocre crime thriller Colors of Evil: Red are at the top of the list.

Godzilla Minus One 2023 was one of the most popular films not only for me and the Moviepilot editorial team, but also for you. In the big community ranking, the monster film even came in second place among the best films of 2023. The Moviepilot and FILMSTARTS editorial teams voted the sci-fi success 18th among all films of 2023. On the review aggregator Metacritic, it impresses with an unusually high 81 out of 100 points.

What makes Godzilla Minus One so good? The latest Godzilla film is a unique mixture of dealing with war, dealing with trauma and state-of-the-art effects. Godzilla Minus One even won an Oscar for its unusually vivid visual effects. The large-footed giant lizard stands above all for the terrible experiences of the war itself and wanders through the lives of millions of Japanese without self-interest, but with maximum destructive power.

For Christopher Cruz of Rolling Stone, it is the best Godzilla film in decades and he sums up the achievement of filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki:

It’s a testament to Yamazaki’s outstanding work as a director and screenwriter that Godzilla Minus One feels like a war character drama first and a kaiju film second.

Tears and great emotions at the end are guaranteed! You can now stream Godzilla Minus One on Netflix.
