In 2022, an unusual pirate series made a name for itself for the first time: Our Flag Means Death told a true adventure story with twisted humor. It was only last year that the half-hour episodes finally came to Germany (on RTL+). As Variety reported, Our Flag Means Death on the Max (formerly HBO Max) channel has unexpectedly come to an end. And that despite the fact that series creator David Jenkins had recently revealed details about his season 3 plans, which should have concluded the adventure with a third act.
The acclaimed pirate adventure Our Flag Means Death tells the story of the wealthy landowner Stede Bonnet, who has a mid-life crisis in 1717 and decides to become a privateer, in the best Pirates of the Caribbean mix of excitement and humor. But not a brutal killer, but a Gentleman pirate. Sounds absurd? But the man really existed.

Bonnet (Rhys Darby) sails the seas with a colorful group of more or less talented pirates and finally meets the legendary Blackbeard (Taika Waititi), who makes him his hostage might. The fact that Taika Waitit (What We Do in the Shadows) supports Our Flag Means Death as an actor and producer is also reflected in this weird humor the adventure series. Here, pirates sew their own flags with dedication and learn to talk about their feelings on deck after looting and killing. The queer crew does the rest to give the story its unusual touch.

The Wall Street Journal called Our Flag Means Death “mischievously mischievous” and Decider dubbed the series as “unique workspace comedy” with a convincing ensemble. Collider again praised the mix “Comedy and Honesty”which she brought with her series.
