Brilliant Pirates of the Caribbean replacement tells one of the most entertaining pirate adventures in years

Brilliant Pirates of the Caribbean replacement tells one of the

Pirates of the Caribbean meets Monkey Island. This is probably the best way to describe the adventure series Our Flag Means Death about the absolutely weird and at the same time heartwarming professional and private lives of a band of pirates in the early 18th century.

You can stream the 2nd (and final) season on RTL+ from today, March 15, 2024. In total 18 episodes full of bizarre adventures and lovable buccaneers invite you to be discovered. You can find out here what awaits you in Our Flag Means Death and why you should definitely watch this gem of a series.

Pirate adventure of a different kind: That’s what Our Flag Means Death is all about

Our Flag Means Death tells the story of aristocrat Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby). That actually existed, but that’s where the historical references end. Stede decides to give up his carefree life and from now on experience adventures on the high seas as a privateer. Unfortunately, he is not very qualified for the job.

Instead, Stede wants to make a name for himself as a gentleman pirate. He buys a ship and hires a (dysfunctional) crew, whom he first has to convince of his unusual ideas. This doesn’t just result in wonderfully funny situations. Because Our Flag Means Death is adventure entertainment with heart that also breaks clichés.

This becomes clear at the latest when, after a few episodes, Captain Bonnet meets the feared pirate Ed Teach aka Blackbeard (Taika Waititi), who, like Stede, is in a mid-life crisis. An unusual friendship develops between the completely different men, which we initially find endearing Culture clash workplace comedy captivates – and ultimately as uncompromising queer pirate love story surprised.

The deeply human message runs through every fiber of Our Flag Means Death: every person – and that includes murderous pirates – deserves love. And so even every pirate, no matter how cynical and bitter, sings sentimental ballads on board the Revenge at some point.

Canceled after 2 seasons: Our Flag Means Death is still worth it

The unusual series mix for Pirates of the Caribbean fans from creator David Jenkins quickly became an insider tip, which was extended for a second season by the streaming service Max (formerly HBO Max) thanks to numerous passionate fans. Five months after its US release, it is finally finding its way to Germany (to RTL+).

Unfortunately, the shocking news followed in January 2024: Our Flag Means Death was canceled. At this point, the last episodes had already been released in the USA.

But don’t worry: the queer pirate adventure is worth it despite the cancellation. After 18 episodes of characters navigating the stormy waters of love, the series finds a hopeful conclusion.

Without a dramatic cliffhanger, but with a few tears and filled hearts Our Flag Means Death drops us back on the mainland (early) after two seasons. Some canceled Netflix series could take a leaf out of this.
