Brilliant Disney remake dares what other remakes only dream of

Celebrating tonight, September 3, 2023 Cruella at 8:15 p.m. on RTL its FreeTV premiere and that is cause for celebration. Because the Disney film dares to go into many corners as the prequel to the villain from 101 Dalmatians, which carefully avoided Disney’s other live-action adaptations.

Today on TV: Cruella fights against old Disney clichés

In Cruella we meet the orphaned Estella (Emma Stone) in 1970s London. The young woman dreams of becoming a great fashion designer. But that’s easier said than done, so she enlists the help of two thieves (Paul Walter Hauser and Joel Fry) to make ends meet. Only when her eye-catching clothing creations catch the eye of the influential Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson) does her moment of glory finally seem to be imminent. But does she have to devote herself to the darker side of her character?

Emma Stone as Estella and her alter ego Cruella

What makes the film Cruella so refreshingly different is that it doesn’t fit into the box of what most people associate with a Disney film. Cruella is not family-friendly and nostalgic, but loud, wild and punky. The film doesn’t want to be one of Disney’s safe 1:1 copies, like recently Beauty and the Beast or The Lion King. Uncredited, he strikes a surprising tone that still fits the original Disney film 101 Dalmatians, but creatively dares to try something new. Just like the risky fashion creations this new Cruella creates.

Disney’s Cruella is different – and that’s why it’s so much fun

Cruella is a burglar, career woman, and punk rock icon on the exciting search for a new identity. Negotiating her mental health isn’t so easy to pigeonhole into good or bad. Leading actress Emma Stone sparkles with enthusiasm in the devious but at the same time enchanting role. What Disney’s villain Maleficent attempted by giving a well-known character a fresh story of her own, Cruella perfects.

Former Dalmatian heroes can be pushed out of the limelight and drawn as snarling beasts. When Cruella surprises with unexpected turns, she shows herself amazingly adventurous in dealing with Disney’s label of “family friendliness”. This adventure does what few Disney remakes have done before: break down old ideas to create something new.

If you missed Cruella on TV on Saturday at 8:15 p.m., RTL am Sunday September 10, 2023 at 2:55 p.m one more repetition. And at Disney+ * you can stream the prequel of the Dalmatian villain at any time anyway.
