The ministers of Elisabeth Borne’s government have been announced. After having spent two years as Minister Delegate in charge of Autonomy, Brigitte Bourguignon has just been promoted to Minister of Health, this Friday, May 20, 2022.

While many names circulated, from Nicolas Revel to Renaud Muselier via Martin Hirsch or Frédéric Valletoux, it is finally Brigitte Bourguignon who has just been appointed Minister of Health and Prevention to succeed Olivier Véran.

A former member of the Socialist Party

Originally from Boulogne-sur-Mer, Brigitte Bourguignon has spent her entire career in Pas-de-Calais, notably being a territorial civil servant in charge of food aid at the Departmental Council, deputy mayor of Boulogne-sur-Mer and deputy since 2012.

The one who served the previous government for two years as Minister Delegate for Autonomy was affiliated with the Socialist Party before joining En Marche in 2017, between the two rounds of the presidential election. Aged 63, Brigitte Bourguignon is a specialist in issues relating to the dependency of the elderly.

As Minister of Health, however, she will be expected on hot issues.

    A particular context

In fact, in a context of growing difficulty for the population to access primary healthcare, both general practitioners and hospital emergencies, the Minister is already faced with various problems to be managed from her assumption of duties.

Reform of the public hospital, reorganization of the health system, malaise of caregivers… So many crises to manage for those who have “great human qualities“, said his former minister Olivier Véran.

    A hot summer for caregivers

And it’s not the files that are missing on his desk: emergency crisis with at least 120 services in difficulty, lack of attractiveness, shortage of medical and paramedical staff, absenteeism… And city medicine is not spared, because there too, the demands are growing. The summer promises to be complicated in the world of health and consequently, for Brigitte Bourguignon.

Finally, in terms of finances, it is the preparation of the Social Security financing bill (PLFSS 2023), which is emerging with a difficult equation, because it is necessary to both initiate the recovery of Social Security, with a deficit of 24.6 billion euros last year, while the demands of the sector have never been so strong.
