No one was injured in a Thursday fire at a homeless encampment under the Lorne Bridge, a spokesperson for the Brantford Fire Department says.

Deputy Fire Chief Dwayne Armstrong said firefighters were first notified of the fire just before 6:20 p.m.

The fire department then received several 911 calls about the blaze as smoke and flames could be seen coming from underneath the bridge.

When firefighters arrived no one was at the encampment, Armstrong said.

Firefighters were able to douse the fire quickly but remained on scene for a couple of hours to monitor the situation.

Brant OPP charged two people with drinking and driving offenses in separate incidents.

The first incident occurred Sept. 20 at about 10:15 pm when officers were dispatched to a collision on Laurel Street.

Upon arrival, police determined a vehicle traveling on Laurel Street struck several parked cars. The driver of the vehicle was arrested and taken to Brantford Police Service headquarters for testing.

Impaired driving charges

A 19-year-old Ancaster man was charged after a vehicle crashed into several parked vehicles on Laurel Street in Brant County on Sept. 20 at about 10:15 p.m.

Brant OPP located the driver, who was taken into custody.

The accused has been charged with impaired driving, dangerous operation of a vehicle, failure to stop after a collision and having a blood-alcohol level of above zero as a novice driver.

On Sept. 22 at about 12:09 am, Brant OPP officers responded to a traffic complaint on Paris Road. Officers found the vehicle, arrested the driver and took her to the Brantford police station for testing.

Police have charged a 22-year-old Brantford woman with impaired driving and driving with more than the legal limit of alcohol in her blood.

A 27-year-old London woman faces charges following a single-vehicle collision on Highway 403 in Brant County.

Brant OPP were called at about 1:24 am on Thursday after a vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. The driver was not injured.

Police took the accused to the detachment for testing and laid charges of operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), and dangerous operation.

Stunt driving charge

Provincial police have charged a 34-year-old Brant County man with speeding and stunt driving following a Sept. 24 incident.

A Brant County OPP officer stopped the vehicle on Bishopsgate Road at about 7:41 p.m.

The officer, who was conducting speed enforcement at the time, spotted a vehicle traveling more than 110 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone.

The driver has been charged with stunt driving (excessive speed) and speeding – driving more than 50 km/h over the posted speed limit. As well, the driver’s license has been suspended for 30 days and the vehicle has been impounded for 14 days.
