Accused of bribery, the Greek member of the European Parliament Eva Kaili may remain in custody in Brussels for at least another week. Kaili was due to appear in court on Wednesday but never made it due to a strike at the prison where she is being held.

A new attempt will now be made on December 22, reports the news agency AFP and the news site Politico Europe.

Kaili and three other people were arrested this weekend as Belgian police cracked down on suspected corruption linked to the European Parliament and an independent organisation. Large amounts of cash worth the equivalent of SEK 15 million have been seized from her father, her partner and a former member of the EU parliament.

Belgian prosecutors have so far publicly singled out only one “Arab country” as responsible for the bribery scandal. However, according to Belgian mass media, it is mainly about Qatar, but also Morocco.
