Action scene in The Mummy nearly killed Brendan Fraser
The story of a resurrected pharaoh who must be stopped by adventurer Rick (Fraser) and Egyptologist Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) is already adventurous. Apparently that was the shooting as well. In a prison scene Rick narrowly escapes death on the gallows which apparently also happened on the set. Weisz explains (via The Free Library):
He almost died. He stopped breathing and had to be resuscitated. But that didn’t hold up the schedule. The crew just said, “Are you okay? Great, let’s move on. Time is money.”

As Fraser and director Stephen Sommers revealed to Entertainment Weekly, the hangman’s rope apparently squeezed an artery and made the actor faint. However, they blame each other for the dangerous mistake. Fraser tells:
Stephen said, “Can we do that again with more tension on the rope? So they tightened the tension. […] I could still see the camera moving and then [wurde mir schwarz vor Augen]. I came to [und] the stunt coordinator just laughed. […] And I was like, “Haha, damn funny! I want to go home.”
According to Sommers bear Fraser himself to blame for the accident. He has “the noose tightenedand then hung heavily into it to make it look real. Despite the potentially life-threatening situation, he and the actor maintained a friendly relationship post-shoot.
The viewers can judge for themselves which of the two is right. According to Fraser, that’s calculated the version with his true unconsciousness ended up in the finished film. Apparently, Sommers found the actor’s genuine swoon very compelling.
