A last-minute statement on Ukraine came from Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu. The guarantor definition of Ukraine, which counts Turkey as one of the guarantor countries, caused controversy.
Çavuşoğlu spoke at the joint press conference with Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Peter Szijjarto. Çavuşoğlu said, “Ukraine wanted a guarantor like the 5th article of NATO. Everyone is against this. Alternative solutions are needed.” said.
Çavuşoğlu also emphasized that comments such as “Turkey will enter the war immediately, Turkey will send soldiers there” are not true.
WHAT IS ARTICLE 5 OF NATO?
After Ukraine asked for a guarantor like the 5th article of NATO, the eyes were turned to the 5th article of NATO. So what is item 5?
When a country declares war on NATO, it also declares war on all NATO countries. This is because Article 5 of the NATO Treaty stipulates that an attack on one member will be considered aimed at all. The fifth article of the NATO Treaty reads as follows:
“The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in North America or Europe shall be considered an attack against all and, if such an attack occurs, the individual or individual acts recognized in Article 51 of the UN Charter have agreed that, in exercising their right of collective self-defense, each will assist the attacked Party or Parties, individually and in concert with the others, to take action deemed necessary, including the use of armed force, to maintain and maintain security in the North Atlantic region. Any such attack and any action taken as a result shall be immediately reported to the Security Council. When the Security Council takes the necessary measures to establish and maintain international peace and security, these measures will be terminated.
STATEMENT ON RACIST ATTACKS IN CANADA AND SWEDEN
Speaking about the Islamophobic attacks in Canada and Sweden, Çavuşoğlu said, “It is not a coincidence that Islamophobic attacks increase in Ramadan. We are not against any kind of attack. We have to be against all kinds of racist attacks and continue the struggle together.” used the phrases.
Regarding the provocation of burning the Qur’an in Sweden, he said, “Attacking the sacred has nothing to do with freedom of expression. We should not make a statement of condemnation, but continue our struggle.”
Stating that Turkey’s diplomacy traffic continues on the Russia-Ukraine line, Çavuşoğlu said, “We are working on these details, which side accepted the offer or not. Ukraine wants a guarantor country, on the one hand, we are in communication with Ukraine and the countries whose name is the guarantor.” said.
