While Israel’s increased bombardment of Gaza continues on its 15th day, the Cairo Peace Summit for Gaza is being held, hosted by Egypt. Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan came to Cairo, the capital of Egypt, for the ‘Cairo Peace Summit’ today. At the summit held in the capital Cairo, Turkey is represented by Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan.
THERE ARE MANY COUNTRIES
At the summit, where Heads of State and Government as well as Ministers of Foreign Affairs will be present, the developments in Gaza, the future of the Palestinian cause and the peace process will be discussed.
Leaders of Jordan, Palestine, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Greece, Italy and Southern Cyprus also attend the summit hosted by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
In addition to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, European Council President Charles Michel and European Union Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Representative Joseph Borrel will also attend the summit.
Minister Fidan is also expected to hold bilateral meetings.
Sisi: WE DID NOT CLOSE IT EVEN FOR A MOMENT BUT…
Giving the opening speech of the summit, Egyptian President Sisi said: “We did not close the Rafah Border Gate even for a moment, but Israeli bombardment on the Palestinian side of the border prevented the passage of humanitarian aid.” he said.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi called on leaders at the Cairo summit to agree on a roadmap to end the humanitarian disaster in Gaza and revive the path to peace.
The King of Jordan emphasized that the forced displacement of Palestinians constitutes a ‘war crime’ and said: “This is a clear violation of international law and humanitarian law, it is a war crime, it is the collective punishment of a besieged and helpless people.” said.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas emphasized that Israeli attacks are unlawful at the Cairo summit and said, “Hospitals and schools are being bombed. Places where civilians take shelter are being bombed. We are making a warning; there is a danger that our civilians will be displaced. We will not accept this. From the first day, this has happened.” We wanted it to be stopped and a humanitarian corridor to be opened. The Israeli government did not allow this. Innocent civilians are being killed. We want the hostages on both sides to be released. The PLO is the only legitimate representative of Palestine. The only solution is to fulfill the two-state solution. To establish an independent Palestine and choose Jerusalem as its capital. “I call for the implementation of the UN resolution.” said.
UN Secretary-General Guterres said, “The needs of the Palestinians are legitimate and many. In the broad context of these tragic events, there is a 56-year occupation. Hamas’s attack cannot be justified, but neither can the collective punishment of Palestinian civilians. Massive humanitarian aid is needed for Gaza. A humanitarian ceasefire is needed.” “I call for it to be achieved immediately. The only solution for real peace is a two-state solution.”
MINISTER FIDAN: “INDEPENDENT PALESTINE STATE SHOULD BE ESTABLISHED”
Speaking at the peace summit, Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan said, “This crisis may lead to wars on a global scale. A fair solution must be found. A return to the two-state solution must be made. An independent Palestinian state must be established.”
Highlights from Minister Fidan’s statements are as follows:
“The current situation in Palestine is a tragedy, it has always been so, but now it is getting worse. We must be unconditional in condemning this. They must be told that Israel’s so-called victories will not provide security in the long term. Israel uses the security of some countries as a blank check.
Military aid to Israel serves no purpose other than deepening the occupation.
Palestine’s suffering is being normalized. We will never allow the suffering of Palestinians to continue. Israel keeps 2 thousand people in prison in Gaza. This crisis may spark wars of global proportions. A fair solution must be found. Türkiye wants the conflicts to stop and unconditional humanitarian aid to be sent to Gaza.
There is a need to return to the two-state solution. An independent Palestinian state should be established. Moreover, there must be a guarantor mechanism. “Turkey is working for an honorable, fair and safe future and thanks Egypt for this summit.”
