Kevin McCarthy, the speaker of the US House of Representatives, was removed from his post in the parliamentary vote after his support among the Republicans decreased, and he became the first speaker in American history to be unseated by the votes of members of his own party. The motion submitted yesterday by Republican member of the House of Representatives Matt Gaetz to unseat the Speaker of the House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy, who is also a Republican, was put to vote today.
The proposal was accepted with 216 “yes” votes against 210 “no” votes.
In addition to the Democrats, 8 Republicans voted “yes” for McCarthy’s dismissal. McCarthy was thus removed from his position as speaker of the House of Representatives, but will continue to be a representative.
Republican Representative Patrick McHenry was appointed interim speaker of the House of Representatives until a new speaker is elected. The US House of Representatives voted for the first time in more than 110 years to unseat the speaker.
After declining support within his own party, McCarthy became the first Speaker of the House of Representatives in modern American history to be removed from office by the votes of members of his own party.

Tensions between McCarthy and a far-right group within the House of Representatives Republicans had been going on for a long time. Republican Florida Representative Gaetz, who is in this group, opposed McCarthy becoming the Speaker of the House of Representatives in January. McCarthy, who had to make some concessions to convince Gaetz and his accompanying group, could only be elected president after 15 votes.
Among the concessions McCarthy made to Republicans who did not support him to become speaker was that one representative’s motion was sufficient for a vote to unseat him.

The tension between Gaetz and McCarthy has increased recently. Gaetz had implied that McCarthy was not a good leader, arguing that he had made “concessions” to Democrats.
McCarthy, on the other hand, noted that Gaetz was busy giving interviews to television channels for his personal gain rather than doing something for the country.
Gaetz recently claimed that McCarthy made a secret agreement with US President Joe Biden and the Democrats regarding aid to Ukraine within the scope of budget negotiations.
Far-right members within the Republican Party are demanding more aggressive steps to be taken to resolve border issues and to reduce Ukrainian aid and spending as much as possible.

Former US President Donald Trump criticized the Republicans’ conflict among themselves in a statement he made on his social media platform TruthSocial before the vote.
Trump asked, “Why are Republicans always fighting among themselves? Why aren’t they fighting the radical left Democrats who are destroying our country?” he said.
