Hamas’s previous political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, was elected Chairman of the Hamas Political Bureau by the Hamas Shura Council on May 6, 2017, replacing Khalid Meshaal.
Haniyeh was killed in the early morning hours of July 31, 2024, after attending the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian, in the house where he was staying in Tehran, the capital of Iran.
Yahya Sinvar, Hamas’s Gaza Strip leader, was chosen to replace Haniyeh.
