Breaking news: After student leaders declared civil disobedience against the government in Bangladesh, thousands of people took to the streets demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Unable to endure the violence that erupted as a result of clashes between demonstrators and protesters across the country, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned. It is reported that Hasina left the country with her sister by military helicopter and went to India. Various press sources reported that Hasina, who has been the prime minister since 2009, is staying in a “safe haven” away from her official residence.
PROTESTERS ENTERED THE PRIME MINISTRY BUILDING
Protesters clashed with police and broke the windows of the prime minister’s building. The death toll from the incidents, in which police used tear gas and plastic bullets to disperse protesters, rose to 99.
On the other hand, 174 people lost their lives in protests against the allocation of public sector quotas for families of those who participated in the 1971 War of Independence in Bangladesh. Although a large portion of the quota was withdrawn by the government’s decision, students continued their protests. The students, who demanded Hasina’s resignation, also rejected Hasina’s offer of unconditional dialogue.
Thousands of people have entered Prime Minister Hasina’s official residence in the capital Dhaka, according to local media and the BBC. Hasina reportedly travelled to a “safer location” by military helicopter, accompanied by her sister Sheikh Rehana. Meanwhile, army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman is reported to have held a meeting with political party leaders.
