Break-ins cause more damage than value of stolen items

Stolen vehicle investigation leads to arrest

Chatham-Kent police are investigating two separate incidents of break, enter and theft from local businesses that resulted in more damage than the value of the stolen items.

Police responded to an alarm at the Liquidation Zone on St. Clair Street in Chatham around 10 p.m. Saturday.

Police said about $5,000 damage was caused during the break-in that resulted in the theft of $500 worth of silver jewelry.

Police said about $1,000 damage was caused when RONA Cashway Building Center on Murray Street in Wallaceburg was broken into early Saturday morning, which resulted in the theft of approximately $900 worth of various DeWalt tools.

Woman charged with theft

A 37-year-old woman, of no fixed address, has been arrested in connection to a shoplifting complaint at Shoppers Drug Mart on Queen Street in Chatham.

Chatham-Kent police responded to the complaint Saturday afternoon and through investigation learned the accused allegedly concealed approximately $475 worth of items in a bag and left the store without paying for the merchandise.

The accused was located a short distance away and taken into custody and the stolen items were recovered and returned to the store, police said.

The woman has been charged with theft and being in possession of property obtained by a crime under $5,000 along with two counts of failing to comply with her release conditions.

She was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
