Brazzaville vibrates to the rhythm of the Tokomi Festival

Brazzaville lives to the rhythm and sound of the “Tokomi” Festival, which means “We have arrived”. A Festival that links dance, songs, workshops and conferences. It brings together, for three days, in the Congolese capital, artists from Congo, Cameroon, France and the United States. Its main initiator wants to set up a dance school in the country.

In the cool of the dry season, the public who stormed the hall of the French Institute of Congo (IFC) form a semicircle.

It is held in suspense by a dozen young girls and boys, T-shirts glued to their bodies, who deliver a beautiful spectacle of acrobatic choreography.

These young people benefited for a few days from the supervision of David Llari, a choreographer from France.

There are shows on sets, but also in halls and in spaces that are not dedicated to that. With this festival, we go everywhere. Yesterday, we were at the Bourreau market (south of the city, editor’s note) and people were totally surprised, amazed to see this type of performance. We are happy to be here “, he remarked

Evaudie Mbo, 23, attended the show. “Overall, it’s as if they [les chorégraphes] were talking about art. We can highlight our traditions and customs through dance. It’s a way of expressing yourself “, she noted

The Congolese choreographer Gervais Tomadiatungainitiator of the Tokomi Festival, took advantage of this second edition to announce his project to create a dance school in Brazzaville.

I want us to train our young people as we train young people in Europe. In this school, young people will follow training as we follow training on dance cycles in Europe “, he said.

The Tokomi Festival will lower its curtains on July 12.
