Brazil’s election result is a fragile victory for democracy – Lula becomes president for the third time

Brazils election result is a fragile victory for democracy

In Brazil, former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva defeated far-right president Jair Bolsonaro in the elections. Lula got a changed country to lead.

RIO DE JANEIRO Brazilians voted in historic presidential elections on Sunday. Former President, Labor Party Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvathe sitting president was declared the winner Jair Bolsonaro against with 50.83 percent of the votes, when 98.81 percent of the votes had been counted.

There were two visions of what kind of country Brazil wants to be.

Lula is remembered as the president of Brazil’s golden age, when the raw materials boom of the 21st century and Lula’s social policies lifted millions of people out of poverty. Lula campaigned with promises of a socially equal society, jobs and ending hunger.

Far-right Bolsonaro campaigns with conservative values, which are summed up in the slogan God, fatherland and religion. He has promised economic growth and eradication of corruption and crime.

It’s about there have been no ordinary elections between the left and the right. Many voted for Lula because the other option would have been a threat to democracy.

During four years, Bolsonaro has eroded the trust of his supporters towards the media and the Supreme Court. He has encouraged the far-right movement with his violent rhetoric. This year’s elections have been marked by an increase in political violence.

Bolsonaro has claimed that the country’s voting system is prone to electoral fraud and hinted that he would not accept the voting result if he lost.

On the day of the election, the pro-Bolsonaro police force practiced despite the prohibition of the Supreme Electoral Court traffic raids (you switch to another service)which made it difficult for voters to get to the polling stations in Lula’s support areas.

Democracy lasted until the end of the election day. Lula now has a tough job ahead of her – not only building a new one, but repairing the old one.

Lula promises to protect the Amazon rainforest, but Bolsonaro has had time, for example, to ruin the country agencies responsible for environmental protection (you will switch to another service). During the Bolsonaro era, Brazil has also become an outcast in international politics, and relations with, for example, the EU must be warmed up again.

In addition, this time Lula has to implement his policy during the global economic crisis.

The biggest challenge is still Bolsonaro, who appeals to a large part of the Brazilian population. Bolsonaro’s party and its allies also strengthened their grip on Congress in the elections. So Lula has to make a lot of concessions.

For now, there is nothing stopping Bolsonaro from running for president again. He has already shown that he can talk to Brazilians who are disillusioned with politics.
