“It was a very busy night,” said Deputy Chief Dwayne Armstrong, noting that the department did not receive any requests for permits for Sunday, November 12.

Brantford’s bylaw regarding the use of fireworks states that they can only be discharged between sunset and 11 pm on Victoria Day and Canada Day and the three calendar days preceding, only on lands owned by the person discharging the fireworks.

Discharging fireworks on any other day requires the user to complete a Consumer Fireworks Permit Application.

Armstrong said if people are found to be setting off fireworks in a city park, the bylaw department would be called to follow up.

“If they are lighting them off at their home, we give them one warning,” Armstrong said. Such cases would be if the manner is deemed to be a fire hazard, no permit was obtained, or discharged outside of the time in which they are allowed. “If we come back a second time there is an invoice that is sent for the cost of the vehicle to attend.”

The cost for such an invoice is about $600.
