For the first time in more than a week, the number of people receiving COVID-19 care in the Brant Community Healthcare System declined.

The BCHS on Tuesday reported 76 COVID patients in hospital, with six in critical care. That’s down from 81 on Monday.

On Tuesday, the Brant County Health Unit reported 62 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours. However, that number is likely underreported because of limited testing.

Since the pandemic began in March 2020, 7,188 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Brantford-Brant, with 6,638 of those resulting in recovered cases.

There are currently 512 active cases in the community but that number is also likely underreported.

There have been 38 local deaths attributed to COVID-19.

There have been 299,788 total doses of the vaccine administered at vaccination clinics in Brantford-Brant. That number includes 121,914 first doses, 119,690 second doses and 58,151 third doses.

In Brantford-Brant, 82.66 per cent of residents, aged five and older, have received one dose of the vaccine while 76.93 per cent have received two or more doses.

The following are a list of walk-in clinics where first and second doses for those aged five and older are being administered:

  • Lynden Park Mall (near Entrance 4), Tuesday through Friday, 12:30 to 6:30 pm and Saturday, 10 am to 3:30 pm
  • 195 Henry St., Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Wednesday, 12:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
  • Paris Fairgrounds, Tuesday through Saturday, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm

Ohsweken Public Health reported 94 active cases on Six Nations of the Grand River as of Friday with 292 people in self-isolation.

There are seven people from Six Nations currently hospitalized.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 1,309 confirmed cases, of which 1,203 are resolved.

Exact numbers were not available but 55 per cent of the population has received a dose of the vaccination, with 50 per cent competing in their vaccination series.

On Tuesday, Public Health Ontario reported a record 4,183 people in hospital with COVID-19.

Of those in hospital, 53.5 per cent were admitted to hospital for COVID-19 while the other 46.5 per cent were admitted for other reasons but tested positive.

There are 580 people in ICUs and 337 are breathing with the help of a ventilator. More than 82 per cent of ICU patients were admitted to hospital with COVID-19 while 17.9 per cent were admitted for other reasons but tested positive.

There were 38 COVID-19 deaths reported Friday, bringing the total to 10,666 since the pandemic began in March of 2020.

There were 7,086 new COVID-19 cases confirmed on Tuesday, however, that number is likely underreported because of limited testing.

Premier Doug Ford is expected to make a “positive” announcement later this week regarding restrictions as Ontario has been in a modified Step 2 re-opening since Jan. 5, resulting in the closure of indoor dining, gyms, theatres, and reducing social gathering limits to five indoors and 10 outdoors.

“We’ll have some positive news,” Ford told Newstalk 580 CFRA’s The Morning Rush with Bill Carroll.

“I believe we’re going to make some announcements later this week about going back to other levels of restrictions.”
