Brant issues second water scam alert this month

Information sessions upcoming for Brants new Official Plan

The County of Brant issued a watermain scam alert on Thursday.

The June 23 alert indicates that residents have received phone calls from people falsely posing as contractors on behalf of the county to arrange a water service line or watermain inspection.

“Please note the County of Brant does not solicit home appointments regarding watermains or water service line inspections, especially those that are located on a private residential property,” says the alert.

Heather Fair, administrative coordinator of operations and corporate services, said that similar to the earlier water meter conversion project, the county puts out notices door-to-door or by mail if work is to be done in a particular area, or county-wide .

“In the instances reported to us yesterday and today, (the callers) say that they want to inspect a watermain on your property,” Fair explained. “Typically, you don’t have a main on your residential property.”

She said that in all cases, County of Brant staff carry proper identification, and residents can call the Water Division to verify being contacted.

Earlier in June the County of Brant issued an alert to residents about a water quality scam.

“Residents have been contacted by people falsely posing as County of Brant employees, requesting to test their water quality by booking an appointment at a certain day and time,” read the alert. “Please note, the County of Brant does not and will not book home appointments regarding the quality of water or to test water at an individual residential property.”

Residents who have concerns with unusual colour, odor or taste in municipal drinking water can contact the County of Brant Water Division at 519-44BRANT (519-442-6278).
