Brant County man charged in fatal crash

A 26-year-old Brant County man has been charged in connection with a fatal collision near Oakland in February.

Brant OPP said Friday they have charged Darris James Wilson with operation while impaired, operation causing death, operation causing bodily harm, dangerous operation causing death and dangerous operation causing bodily harm.

The charges are the result of an investigation into a two-vehicle crash on Oakland Road just before 4:30 pm on Feb. 11.

Sierra Beverly, 12, of Six Nations of the Grand River, died after being transported to hospital, while her mother, Naomi Beverly, was critically injured.

Two other people were released after treatment of minor injuries.

The girl’s stepfather, Larry Demelo, told The Expositor at the time that Sierra’s mother was driving her to a sleepover in Tillsonburg when their vehicle was involved in a head-on collision on Oakland Road, between Brant Mill Road and Walter Street.

Sierra attended Westfield Public School in Tillsonburg and continued online learning with the school after the family moved to Six Nations last July.

Demelo’s cousin, Ashley Martin, set up a GoFundMe campaign for the family, raising $17,705.

Martin posted an update March 17 on the campaign webpage, thanking donors for their generosity in helping Naomi’s recovery.

“Although she is still very fragile, the improvements she has made in such a short amount of time gives us great hope that she will continue to strengthen and heal,” she said.

“She is able to communicate basic thoughts and emotions through speaking. There is still a long road ahead of us.”
