Because we now know for sure that the roads in Roman Utrecht ran differently than had long been thought. The great Limesweg, “the A1 of the Roman Netherlands”, connected all the forts along the northern border of the Roman Empire. From about 90 AD, that main road ran along the then course of the Rhine, from Nijmegen to Katwijk. It was long assumed that the road in Utrecht ran approximately along the Kromme Rijn via the canal and Domplein, but that was not the case. Since 2006 we have known that the large Limesweg under Utrecht cut a large bend in the river and ran via Lunetten, Hoograven and Kanaleneiland.
