Brain tapping what is this trendy technique to fall asleep

“Brain tapping” or “brain tapping” is the name given to a trend that has gone viral on Tiktok to facilitate sleep.

Insomnia, stress and anxiety are common in our society. Even more so since the end of the Covid-19 epidemic. “Since January 2022, more than 2/3 of French people between 25 and 45 suffer from sleep disorders and 8 out of 10 people report nocturnal awakenings“reminds us of Dr. Laurent Millera, a general practitioner specializing in sleep. Many approaches are used to counter sleep disorders. Recently, the brain tapping method in English did the social media buzz. “You start with pat the top of your head with your fingers… After you tap above the eyebrows then in the corner of the eyes, under the eyes, under the nose, the chin“explains Margy Feldhun, neuro-somatic coach in a video posted on tiktok. An account “The Tapping Solution” has emerged on this social network and shares different ways to practice brain tapping.

Brain Tapping not really “new”

Brain tapping is also known as Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). EFT combines elements of traditional Chinese medicine, psychology and acupuncture. This method has been developed in the 1990s speak American psychotherapist Gary Craig. She recommends to tapping on specific points of the body (face, chest, head) while repeating affirmations such as “I’m relaxed” or “I’m falling asleep“. The goal of EFT is tobalance the body’s energy system all in reducing negative emotions associated with a specific problem. Tapping on these points while focusing on the problem and positive thoughts would help release energy blockages and to reduce stress, anxiety and negative emotions. Furthermore, the brain clings to rhythmic patterns (especially breathing). Creating rhythm by tapping specific points and then slowing down the tapping slows brain activity which promotes a calm state conducive to falling asleep.

Limited scientific evidence

In terms of effectiveness, EFT is attracting growing interest, but it should be remembered that the scientific evidence is still limited and that more research is needed to confirm its effectiveness. A healthy lifestyle consisting of establishing a regular sleep routine, avoiding screens and stimulants before bedtime and creating a suitable environment in the bedroom improves the quality of sleep.
