Boy dead after elevator accident in Gothenburg

The boy who was injured in the elevator accident in Gothenburg on Wednesday has died, Sahlgrenska Hospital announces.
The rescue service now states that several firefighters have been taken out of service.
– I am so very sad and saddened, says Lars Klevensparr, head of the rescue service to
Gothenburg Post.

On Wednesday, a five-year-old boy got stuck in an elevator on the fifth floor of a building in Gothenburg. During the rescue operation, the boy fell down the elevator shaft and suffered serious injuries. He has since been treated for life-threatening injuries.

On Sunday, Sahlgrenska informed the hospital that he had died, something that GP was the first to report.

– We can confirm that the boy is deceased, says Lisa Räng at Sahlgrenska hospital’s press service to TV4 Nyheterna.

The police have launched an investigation into the incident, to see if any wrongdoing was committed in connection with the operation. Lars Klevensparr, head of the Greater Gothenburg Fire Service, tells the newspaper that several firefighters have been removed from duty after the news that the boy died.

– I am very sad and saddened, he says.

– The firefighters who were on the scene have been taken out of service. Of course, they still have their salary. They feel so bad, so now it is important that we take care of them in the very best way, and that we make sure they get the help and support they need.

The emergency services made a report to the Swedish Work Environment Authority after the accident occurred earlier this week. The emergency services will decide what measures to take after the police investigation is complete, according to Göteborgs-Posten.
