Boxing: Heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk arrested by Polish police – President Volodymyr Zelenskyj furious

Pictures on social media show Usyk, on his way to London to watch the title fight between Daniel Dubois and Anthony Joshua at Wembley on Saturday, being led away in handcuffs.

“I spoke on the phone with Oleksandr Usyk when he was arrested. I was outraged by this treatment of our citizen and champion,” Zelensky writes on Telegram.

It is unclear what prompted the arrest of Usyk.

“I have instructed Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha and Ukrainian Interior Minister Igor Klymenko to immediately find out all the details of the incident at Krakow airport,” Zelenskyy continues.

First with four heavyweight belts

According to Usyk’s promoter, it’s all about a misunderstanding and the situation was resolved quickly.

“Thanks to Ukrainian diplomats for the effective support. And respect to the Polish police for carrying out their duties regardless of height, weight, reach and championship belts,” Usyk writes on X.

Usyk, undefeated in his 22 bouts, has not boxed since beating Tyson Fury on May 19 to become the first heavyweight boxer to hold all four world championship belts.
