Boxing: Bloody Mikaela Laurén did not become the oldest world champion: “Too many scalps”

– It was a much tougher match than I expected. She is a great, great champion and it was a nice fight, says Laurén in Viaplay’s broadcast.

Kotaskova was the better boxer even if Laurén was not outboxed in any way. “Mickan, Mickan” Laurén’s fans were heard cheering in the venue in Vienna. When the match was over, they hugged each other.

At 23.26 the judges announced that Kotaskova had won the match. All three judges had the Austrian as the winner: 98-92, 99-92 and 97-94.

“Watch Me: A Freak Show”

In the middle of the second round, the Swede cracked high up on her forehead at the hairline after they collided and started bleeding profusely, which looked quite dramatic.

– Unfortunately, there were too many scalps. Look at me, it looks like I’m in a “freak show” but I’m a warrior and really never give up and box until the end, says Laurén.

The blood from Laurén was transferred to Austrian Michaela Kotaskova who put her WBF world welterweight title on the line.

– I am turning 49 and I am very proud of myself to have been boxed in this match, says Laurén.

Left eye blocked

In the subsequent round breaks, Laurén’s profuse bleeding was treated and halfway into the match in 10×2 minutes, when time ran out, the team around Laurén had got control of the bleeding, which, however, continued to irritate from time to time.

However, Laurén had received a lot of blows to the red swollen face where the left eye was blocked and extra swollen. She received extensive treatment with, among other things, ice to contain the swelling.

The record as the world’s oldest female world champion in boxing is held by Alicia Ashley from Jamaica. She was 48 years and 67 days old.
