The parent council at Boston Public School has dubbed it’s first Boston Flower Market fundraiser a blooming success after raising just over $1,000 toward new playground equipment for the school.
The event partnered volunteers from the council with Creekside Growers, a small local flower grower near Delhi, to pre-sell 165 handcrafted bouquets for Mother’s Day.
“We’re trying to be pro-active about what needs to happen,” said Lara Rockefeller, the council president.
The council has been warned the school’s outdated playground, which is inspected annually by the school board, is on its “last legs” said Rockefeller and it will cost about $90,000 to replace.
And, with an influx of new students arriving due to a boundary review by the Grand Erie District School Board, the council wants to ensure it starts amassing the needed funds since the board doesn’t pay for playgrounds.
“We have an additional 60 students coming to the school this fall from Waterford, right off the hop,” said Rockefeller, “and that doesn’t count those who are moving to the area, so we’re going to have a lot of new kids.”
She said the school, which has never had portables in the past, will be using two portables in the fall and go from 80 percent to 110 per cent capacity.
The flower market event is just the first of aa number of initiatives the council is planning over the coming school year.
Rockefeller said donations are also accepted directly through the school, which is at 2993 Cockshutt Road between Wilsonville and Bealton.
