Bought prom dress and handbags with student nation money – treasurer charged

The woman, who is in her 30s, was arrested in April this year when she was about to travel out of Sweden.

In questioning, she says that she had a tough time financially and has always had the intention of replacing the nation. She admits to using the nation’s card for private purchases, but denies wrongdoing.

In total, the woman spent SEK 314,523 of the nation’s money on private purchases. The evidence includes, among other things, a prom dress for SEK 6,400 and a gray designer bag bought second-hand online for SEK 18,000.

Club night with the theme of embezzlement

Now the student nation invites itself to club nights with the theme of embezzlement, where visitors are invited to dress in a prom dress and carry a handbag. The purpose is to reduce the spread of rumors and make the difficult situation of the nation into something better.

How could this happen?

– We are a smaller nation that sometimes has difficulty finding people to sit in our positions of responsibility and then we have had a knowledge gap in how to have an overview of the economy and also in the positions where you should have caught it, says the nation’s current curator.

Municipal subsidy during the pandemic

During the period that the woman was treasurer, the student nations received grants from Lund municipality and Lund University as compensation for loss of income during the corona pandemic. SEK 380,000 each went to the nations.

– When we pay out money, we expect all the organizations we support to be careful with the money they receive, this also applies to the student nations, says Lina Olsson (S), member of the municipal board in Lund, who hopes that the incident will not must prevent the municipality from being able to support student life in the future as well.

Judgment is expected on October 4.
