Bothnia’s desirable pearl – only one trip a year to Skvalpen

The Luleå archipelago consists of 1,312 islands, coves and skerries. One of them is Skvalpen, about 17 nautical miles (3.1 km) from Södra hamn. And the question is, does it not take the prize as the most eye-catching?

The pearl of the Gulf of Bothnia is a youth in the context and rose from the sea only a hundred years ago. From May 1 to July 31, you are also not allowed to disembark on the island to protect the birdlife.

Although almost all birds have left the island after the end of the breeding season, there are still traces of newly hatched bird feet.

Visitor Carola: “Clean playa”

When SVT is on site, ten boats are moored at the shore. The Sundbom family, from Västerbotten, are repeat guests on the island.

– We learned about the island from neighbors when we bought the cottage on Kallaxön, that it was pure playa. It’s like going abroad, says Carola Sundbom.

The island is almost exclusively covered in sand and it’s about kilometer-long beaches. SVT takes the opportunity to visit the island while it is allowed, so come along to the paradisiacal environment far out in the archipelago.
