Hockey icon Börje Salming died aged 71 after battling ALS. He played over 1,000 NHL games for his Toronto and is inducted into the hockey Hall of Fame.
Salming’s death has touched many and the tributes have been enormous.
The son of Kiruna and the hockey hero has now got his own street in his old hometown. During a ceremony in Jukkasjärvi with Salming’s closest people present, the street received its new name. At the same time, an ice sculpture depicting Börje Salming during his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs was unveiled.
Brother Stig Salming is noticeably affected.
– It is really pretty. To be in Kiruna and to take part in such a beautiful ceremony. There are so many people who have turned up here that you are moved to tears, he says.
