Börje Salming has been widely praised in Canada and Sweden.
Now also comes a very emotional tribute from Orust.
“Thank you Börje, for being able to take it,” writes ALS sufferer Heléne Olsson in a text message to P4 Gothenburg.
In recent weeks, much has been about the Swedish hockey icon Börje Salming and his fight against ALS. With his great courage, the 71-year-old has become a face for the terrible nerve disease and has been widely praised around the hockey world.
Börje’s tributes
It became very emotional when Salming went to Canada to be honored in his old hometown of Toronto. Two days in a row, he gathered his strength and took to the ice to be hailed by tens of thousands of spectators in the stands.

Then Salming and his immediate family returned to Sweden again to receive another tribute on Swedish soil. When the Swedish Ice Hockey Association celebrated 100 years, much focus was directed towards Börje during the “Hockey Gala of the Times”.

“You are the best!”
The 71-year-old received a standing ovation on several occasions during Thursday night at the Avicii Arena and the legend formed a heart with his hands to show his great gratitude. Now comes the next emotional tribute to Börje Salming.

For in Orust, outside Gothenburg, sat Helene Olsson in front of the TV and saw the beautiful tributes to the hockey hero during SVT’s broadcast. She has had ALS for twelve years and now sends a warm thank you to Börje Salming.
“The disease needs all the attention it can get. Thank you, Börje, for having the energy to pull off this fantastic gala. Now we are keeping our fingers crossed for a changed view of us sufferers and that we can get better living conditions. We love life and want to live it to the fullest until the body can’t take it. Many hugs to you, Börje, you are the best!”, writes Heléne in a text message to P4 Gothenburg.
