Börje Salming had one wish for the TV series about himself – and it warms everyone’s heart: “He didn’t want it”

The TV series about Börje Salming will soon premiere.
Before the creation of the series, the former hockey player had a wish.
– That’s not what he wanted the series to be, says screenwriter Martin Bengtsson to Sportbibeln.

The 19th of November is the premiere of the series about Börje Salming. It is called “Börje – The Journey of a Legend”, and Walter Skarsgård (Begin), Hedda Stiernstedt (Margaret Hymn) and Oscar Skagerberg (Stig Salming) can be found among the main roles.

Salming & Skarsgård

The series began to be created over two years ago, when Börje was still alive. He was a long way into the process and the creation of the series, before he died during the filming almost a year ago. Before his death, Börje had no demands on Valter Skarsgård regarding the actor’s portrayal of himself.
– Not that I know of, anyway. He seemed pretty convinced that I was right for the role very early on. I was told afterwards that after the first meeting he had spoken up Amir (Chamdindirector) “ah, there we have him”, and it wasn’t much more than that, says Skarsgård to Sportbibeln.

On the other hand, Valter had things to himself.
– I made demands on myself in training and hockey and stuff like that. I think Börje’s attitude was that he doesn’t have a very good grasp of how a film shoot works. So he was a bit like this “oh, go ahead”. He probably left it to us and trusted us to work it out. Because it’s hard for him to say “you have to do this or that”, because he doesn’t really know how a film shoot works. So there were no demands in that way, he was mostly tagged, it felt like, says the actor.

Börje’s demands

Scriptwriter Martin Bengtsson just felt that there was a small request from Börjes on the side.
– When we entered the project, the prerequisite for the project was that Börje was involved in a way. I didn’t feel that there were any special requirements like “we shouldn’t tell about this” or anything like that. Rather the opposite. I felt that Börje, in our conversations and when we started mapping and approaching “what kind of story is this”, he was very open and shared.
– He did not want this to become a beautiful portrait in any way. Without it reflecting the dilemmas and conflicts that existed, and also his scruples and vulnerability. So I didn’t feel that there was anything you couldn’t tell about, he wanted us to get close to what was true for him, says Bengtsson.

How nice was the script writing?
– It was very nice, and somewhere a prerequisite for writing a script. Otherwise it will be advertising. Then it becomes something else if you arrange it that way. It was a prerequisite for me to write the project that there was an opportunity to go deep, and get to the bottom of the relationships, conflicts and dilemmas that existed, says the former soccer player.

Börje – The Journey of a Legend is broadcast on Viaplay from November 19.
