Late on Wednesday, the news came that Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s ethics adviser Christopher Geidt is resigning. This is just a few weeks after an investigative report was handed over to Johnson – regarding the criticized partying that took place on Downing Street during the pandemic.

According to Johnson’s office, the news of Geidt’s resignation was a surprise as he has remained at work throughout the “partygate” period.

Geidt himself has not yet stated why he is resigning. During a hearing of parliamentary leaders earlier this week, however, he is said to have said he was “frustrated” at work. Also that he was not completely independent, as he was appointed by the Prime Minister.

It is the Prime Minister’s other other ethics advisers who have left in a short time. Deputy ethics adviser Alex Allan resigned in November 2020 after commenting on bullying among staff.
