British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said a moment ago during question time of the British Parliament that he will continue in his position despite the recent resignations. According to Johnson, he has a “huge mandate” behind him to continue as prime minister.
During question time, not only opposition representatives demanded Johnson’s resignation, but also a handful of representatives from Johnson’s Conservative Party.
Distrust has been caused by the way Johnson has handled the member of parliament who served as the leader of his party by Chris Pincher harassment allegations.
Deputy ministers are ministers outside the government who have a smaller role in the government than the actual ministers.
Johnson: In difficult times, you shouldn’t get divorced
During question time, Johnson criticized the resigned ministers for leaving their jobs in the midst of difficult times.
– Just when times are difficult and the country’s economy is under pressure – and Europe is going through the biggest war in 80 years – then the government is expected to continue its work and not walk away, says Johnson.
Yesterday, the first minister of health to resign Sajid Javid called on other ministers to resign in his resignation speech.
– The balance between loyalty and integrity has become impossible recently, says Javid.
Chairman of the Labor Party Keir Starmer has already called on the entire government to resign.
The opposition leader criticized both Johnson and the government ministers for the fact that, according to Starmer, they have looked through Pincher’s actions. He mocked ministers who resigned only now after first defending Johnson.
– Is this the first time that sinking ships leave a rat behind? Starmer asked during Question Time.
Starmer grilled Johnson about why Pincher was given a position of power in the government and read aloud a statement from a person who had accused Pincher of harassment.
Johnson assured during question time that he acted as soon as new accusations about Pincher’s activities emerged last week. The prime minister also tried to steer the conversation towards the government’s efforts to improve the British economy and bring relief to consumers.
– We want to help people with things that matter to them, such as tax cuts, Johnson said.
The separation wave started on Tuesday
Yesterday, Tuesday, the Minister of Finance Rishi Sunak and the Minister of Health Sajid Javid resigned from their positions. The reason for both was distrust of Prime Minister Johnson. In addition, a Conservative MP Laura Trott has announced that he is resigning from his post as assistant to the Minister of Transport. He also justifies his resignation by the loss of trust in the government.
Quince, who announced his resignation today, writes that he found out that he has repeated information given to him to the media, which has since been revealed to be false. In an interview on Monday, Quince had defended Johnson, saying that the prime minister was not aware of any specific accusations against Pincher, reports the BBC, among others.
As expected, the accusations surfaced during question time. Johnson said he condemns bullying and abuse of power.
New appointments already yesterday
Late on Tuesday evening, Johnson appointed new ministers to replace the finance minister and the health minister who resigned from his government. The new Minister of Finance was appointed as Minister of Education Nadhim Zahawi and served as the Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff as Minister of Health Stephen Barclay.
