Borderlands 4 seems to continue the story that was promised to us 10 years ago

A new trailer for Borderlands 4 was shown at the Game Awards 2024, which finally hints at parts of the new story. The trailer is reminiscent of a prophecy that was made 10 years ago but was ignored in Borderlands 3.

Danger: The following article contains spoilers about the ending of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and Borderlands 3.

What can you see in the new trailer? A new trailer for Borderlands 4 was presented at the Game Awards 2024, in which you not only get a first look at the Vault Hunter, environment and gameplay, but also a first glimpse of the possible story.

In the trailer you can see 2 factions running towards each other with an army. The first army full of Borderlands psychos is led by a robot woman with huge metal arms.

On the other side, you see a man in a suit leading an army of masked soldiers who all look the same. At the end of the trailer, only the man stands in front of a chamber door.

Will the ending of the pre-sequel finally continue?

Borderlands 4 could finally follow on from Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. The new trailer for Borderlands 4 also hints at events from the pre-sequel. The moon Elpis could be seen in the first reveal trailer.

Pre-Sequel was actually a prequel to Part 2, in which we see how Jack later became a villain. But there are also scenes from the present in which you see the character Athena, who is known from the Borderlands 1 DLC The Secret Armory of General Knoxx. In Pre-Sequel she was one of the playable Vault Hunters.

At the end of the pre-sequel you see Lilith wanting to shoot her because Athena helped Jack. But Athena is saved by a watcher. The Watcher is an Eridian creature associated with the Chambers. The Watcher explains: War is coming. And you need every exterminator you can get.

This is no longer taken up in later DLCs for the pre-sequel and the third part does not continue with it either. There you fight against the Calypso twins. But you can’t really speak of a war. Athena also doesn’t appear in Borderlands 3.

The status of the most important characters is uncertain

In the trailer for Borderlands 4, a war is now hinted at. You can see this clearly in the 2 factions that fight each other with small armies. The return of old exterminators is also shown again; in the trailer you can see an older version of Zane, who you could play in Borderlands 3.

But there is neither Lilith nor Athena in the video. Athena should still be alive in the world of Borderlands. With Lillith the whole thing is a little more unclear. She sacrificed herself at the end of Borderlands 3, but it’s not known if she’s really dead.

It is also unclear which factions the trailer for Part 4 is about. The psychos are seemingly controlled by the robot woman through masks, and the mysterious man doesn’t seem like the classic Borderlands CEO, as he also appears to have magical powers. But you won’t have to wait long for new information, because the game will be released in 2025.
