Borderlands 4 will be the most open game in the series, but it will not offer a full open world experience. The game is preparing to be released in 2025.
Announced at The Game Awards last month Borderlands 4will be released for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S in 2025. Fans of the series thought that the game would have a full open world structure due to previous statements. However, Randy Pitchford, head of Gearbox Software, stated that Borderlands 4 cannot be described as an “open world”, but that it will be the most open game of the series so far. This statement created anticipation and confusion among fans.
Borderlands 4 and the Open World Debate
Although the previous games of the series had open world elements, they did not fall into the completely open world category. While Randy Pitchford described Borderlands 4 as a “freer” experience, he said that the term “open world” did not suit the game. In his post on social media platform X, Pitchford said, “The term open world has many connotations that do not fit this game. “When you see the game, you will understand why I said so,” he said.
It’s still unclear exactly how open-structured the game will be. However, Borderlands 4 aims to offer more player freedom than previous games in the series. This could allow players to experience story progression and mission completion more flexibly.
According to the official description of the new game, Borderlands 4 takes place on a new planet called Kairos. Players will pursue wealth and fame by choosing one of four new Vault Hunters. The evil character of the game is the Timekeeper, a cruel dictator who controls Kairos with his oppressive rule.
Players will battle enemies with a variety of action abilities, customizable skill trees, and dynamic movement mechanics. They will also face many different types of enemies, from mechanical monsters to bloodthirsty bandits.
Borderlands 4 is expected to be released in summer 2025. Although an exact release date has not been announced yet, the details of the game will become clear in the coming months. Fans of the series are eagerly waiting to see what innovation Borderlands 4 will bring to the series with its new planet, characters and gameplay mechanics.
