Borderlands 3 PS5-PS4 Crossplay is finally happening

Borderlands 3 PS5 PS4 Crossplay is finally happening

Gearbox only allowed crossplay between PC, Stadia and Xbox versions of Borderlands 3. However, this feature was not available on PS4 and PS5.

Gearbox released an update for Borderlands 3 last year that enables cross-play between the PC, Stadia, and Xbox versions of the game. However, the feature was not included in Sony versions, and fans of the game on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 were only able to play Borderlands 3 in-house. It looks like this will change soon. In a press release, Gearbox announced that this crossover will be enabled on PS4 and PS5, although no specific timeframe was given.

Borderlands 3 PS5-PS4 Crossplay is finally happening

In May 2021, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford announced that the Borderlands 3 team “should be removed by the publisher to remove cross-play support for PlayStation consoles”. Pitchford didn’t go into detail as to why 2K Games had to be removed, but at the time there was much speculation that this could be related to royalty payments for Sony.

In the past, PlayStation has been hesitant to adopt crossplay and crosssave in its games, particularly games like Fortnite and Minecraft. These issues with Epic Games and Microsoft have finally been resolved, and it looks like 2K Games and Sony have similarly found some sort of solution.

Borderlands 3 players must be very happy with this news. Crossplay has been a great way for players to enjoy the same games together regardless of platform, potentially extending the life of games.
