John Bolton, who was the national security adviser to former US President Donald Trump, admits in a CNN interview that he helped plan coups in other countries.

The statement comes in connection with Bolton arguing that the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021 was not an attack on democracy, but only a result of Donald Trump looking after his own interests.

“As someone who helped plan coups, not here but you know, in other places – it takes a lot of work,” Bolton told CNN.

Bolton was Trump’s adviser from 2018 to 2019. He was also the US ambassador to the United States from 2005 to 2006, and is known for his support of the Iraq war and for having advocated US intervention in Iran and North Korea.

He did not mention which countries he planned coups in.
