A police investigation is said by an anonymous police source to point to Jair Bolsonaro as a key person behind the riots that followed his election loss in early 2023.
The same source says several high-ranking members of Bolsonaro’s government were also involved.
Bolsonaro himself has denied any involvement and has called the investigation “political persecution”.
Want to prosecute him
The news agency AP reports that the police want to prosecute Bolsonaro and 36 other people for the coup attempt.
A prosecutor is said to have the task of deciding whether the case will be prosecuted or not.
On Tuesday, the police arrested four commanders in the military and one in the police who are suspected of, among other things, having planned to kill Brazil’s current president Lula and other high-ranking people.
Not admitting defeat
Jair Bolsonaro has still not admitted defeat in the election
He was Brazil’s president between 2019 and 2022, and he plans to run again for the 2026 election.
Should he be convicted of the coup attempt, he faces a long prison sentence.
